Alligator Reef Light
is 4 nautical miles east of Indian Key,
north of Alligator Reef itself.
Was established in 1873 and last operational in July 2014.
Light is 136 feet above the water, white with black lantern.
Name honors the US Navy schooner Alligator which
went aground at this location in 1822.
The Alligator was blown up after removing as much
as possible to prevent it from being used by pirates.
Feb. 2019 it was announced it would be given away freely
to any government or educational agencies.
