Bimini Saturday
Saturday went out fishing and more snorkeling and conch fishing.

As you can see the ocean was flat. No fish were biting.
I did catch a barracuda. But gave up and jumped in
the water to cool off instead.

Bimini Friday
We arrived to Bimini around noon unpacked ate and went out on the water.
Here is where we stayed
We then went site seeing, snorkeling, spear fishing, and conching ( is that a word ? lol)
SS Sapona
Here is some information I found about the wreck.
Built by Henry Ford and Liberty Ship Building Company of Wilmington, North Carolina in 1911. Launched in January 1920 and is the sister ship of Cape Fear. This concrete cargo vessel designed by Henry Ford, commissioned by President Woodrow Wilson during WWI.
It was sold for scrap to Carl G. Fisher since the war was over. Fisher traded the ship's engine and machinery to a dredging company in exchange for dredge work and then the ship was used to store oil.
In April of 1924 the Sapona was sold to a one armed Englishman named Bruce Bethel. He lost an arm while serving. Retired to Bimini Bruce became a flourishing rum runner, he wanted to use the Sapona as a liquor warehouse. The ship ran aground while being towed to Bimini. Bruce Bethel thought he could turn it into a nightclub but that changed in 1926 when a hurricane destroyed the ship, splitting the stern which is where it remains today. The Storm of 1926 was probably the most destructive hurricane ever to strike the US.
Bethel had a incident in which was cast adrift at sea, allegedly went insane after this and Bethel died penniless in 1950.
Later the ship was used as target practice by Air Force and Navy during WWII. The legendary " Lost Squadron of Flight 19 " disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle on Dec. 5, 1945 while returning from a practice bombing of the Sapona. It's said the bombing of the Sapona stopped shortly after.

Here is some information on the area we are going.
Bimini is made up three islands;
North Bimini - Long flat narrow, 1600 residents, Alice Town
South Bimini - Airstrip, small community known as Port Royal, few
accomodations mostly private homes.
East Bimini -
General Information:
During prohibition in the US Bimini was a favorite haven for the rum running trade.
William S. McCoy used Bimini to transport whiskey to America and some claim the term " the real McCoy" came from this. Bimini was a common travel destination for Hemingway. Which was the inspiration for " the Old Man and the Sea " and " Islands in the Stream ". The hotel known as Compleat Angler Hotel where he once stayed was destroyed in 2006 by fire.
Ernest Hemingway was a guest from 1935 - 1937 and was said to have worked on " To Have and Have Not" there. The hotel was damaged in a 1936 hurricane but repaired. The hotel later became a tourist attraction for Bimini and housed Hemingway memorabilia, including signed copies of his work and photographs. The owner Julian Brown perished in the blaze after leading a guest to safety.
